From The Pastor’s Desk

I always look forward to our Christmas Candlelight Services. Over the years we have put a lot of energy into inviting and welcoming people to the services. Several very active members of our church first attended a Christmas Eve service. I still remember meeting them and where we were standing during our initial conversation before or after the Christmas Candlelight Service.

Several years ago, we began to offer an early candlelight service for people who may be out of town on Christmas Eve. This year Christmas is on a Sunday, so I expect there might be several who will be away at family gatherings on Christmas Eve. The early candlelight service is on Wednesday, December 21, at 6:30 pm.

In addition, there will be an early candlelight service at the St Jacob United Methodist Church in St. Jacob, Illinois, on Saturday, December 17, at 5:00 pm.  You are welcome to attend that service if it fits in your schedule more easily. I will be preaching and Clint Benesh will be helping out with music that evening. Clint leads worship for our youth ministry each Wednesday night.  (He’s a left handed guitarist in case you are wondering!)

On Christmas Eve Candlelight Services are at 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, and 11:00 pm. here at Troy.  Another church that is part of our ministry is the Worden United Methodist Church in Worden, Illinois. The Christmas Eve Candlelight Service in Worden is at 6:00 pm. Sue Busler will be speaking at that service.

One other feature of Christmas Eve here at the Troy UMC is a communion service at 5:15 pm. This fairly brief service is strategically scheduled so that people who want to receive communion on Christmas Eve can attend it after the 4:00 pm service or come early and attend the communion service and then the 6:00 pm candlelight service. The communion service is in the sanctuary. This year, our District Superintendent, Rev. Roger Grimmett will be leading the communion service. We welcome Roger here to lead the service; you are welcome to participate in it.

One last thing: One Christmas Day service at Troy at 11:00 am in the sanctuary!

I look forward to celebrating Christmas with you at one or more of these worship opportunities.

See you Sunday,

dennis
