“Gentle Gardener”

So many have asked for the lyrics to the “Gentle Gardener” song that was sung at Pastor Dennis’ last Sunday.  Here they are!

Gentle Gardener,  Dr. Alan Stein

Once upon a fabled time, as many now have heard,

There came to us a gentleman, who came to spread the word.

We knew he was a preacher man (in that he would excel),

But all who came to know him, know something else as well.

Behold the gentle gardener, with hoe and seeds he came,

Came here to plant his garden, came here in Jesus’ name.

Behold the gentle gardener, forever would he toil,

Planting for the future, he deftly worked the soil.

No trumpets there to greet him, he humbly took his place.

Took up his garden implements and sectioned off his space.

For all these years he’s planted seeds and tended them with care.

He nourished them with love and hope, with laughter and with prayer.

This is the gentle gardener who came to scatter seeds-

To sew them in our memory and minister our needs.

This is the gentle gardener, forever would he toil,

Planting for the future, he deftly worked the soil.

And from those seeds a garden grew, such flowers, such bouquet!

He gave to them, they gave to him, each and every day.

And now the gardener’s done his part, he’s planted all his seeds.

He knows what lies in all our hearts, we wish him now God-speed.

For after he has gone his way, his garden will remain,

To remind us of the joy he brought and the love we all have gained.

God-speed dear gentle gardener we thank you for your care!

You planted well and wisely, created something rare!

God-speed dear gentle gardener, remember as you go-

We’ll not forsake your garden, for it’s within our soul.

Now we will tend the precious blooms, and we will do our part.

From year to year we’ll watch them grow, and never feel apart

From you our gentle gardener-  each spring we’ll call your name,

And as you hear the echo, know your garden’s still the same.

Farewell dear gentle gardener, we thank you for your care.

You planted well and wisely, created something rare!

God-speed dear gentle gardener, remember as you go-

We’ll not forsake your garden, for it’s within our soul.
